The Scientist at Hologic, Inc. in Marlborough, MA will:

  • Plan, design and conduct bench level experiments to evaluate new technologies and new product concepts.

  • Interpret scientific data and results as related to product/process development and improvement.

  • Operate and maintain scientific apparatus and equipment related to performance of duties.

  • Utilize and apply advanced methods to evaluate state of the art technologies to explore new market opportunities.

  • Investigate early product concepts by developing prototypes.

  • Support design and development of disposable medical devices and implant constructs to meet product design goals.

  • Identify problems, investigate alternatives and recommend possible courses of action through experimentation.

  • Act as technical liaison with cross-functional team members.

  • Develop collaborative efforts with external key opinion leaders and academic institutions.

  • Attend national professional conferences and trade shows in order to keep up with current research in the areas of radiological imaging, interventional/surgical, implants, and biomaterial trends.

  • Requires up to 20% domestic and international travel to conduct global product research and support Hologic's global operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires Ph.D. in Bioengineering or Life Science, plus one year of materials science experience.

  • Within one year of experience, must also have at least one year of experience with each of the following:

  • Working knowledge of the different stages of product development, design control and regulatory processes for disposable medical instruments and implants;

  • Analyzing materials and material properties for medical grade biomaterials and non-medical grade materials in order to select/propose specific materials used in early prototype development;

  • Selection and application of diverse material characterization techniques applied to medical grade and non-medical grade biomaterials (metals, polymers, and ceramics);

  • Applying ASTM and ISO standards to analyze medical devices, long term implant constructs and biomaterials before and after in vivo and/or simulated in vitro performance (including macroscopic, microscopic, material characterization, mechanical testing, and accelerated ageing, sterilization);

  • Hands-on experience with failure analysis techniques for device/material evaluations;

  • Research experience with substantial amount of laboratory work including: Developing, executing and reporting findings of bench test methodologies simulating clinical/end use conditions to evaluate performance of diverse devices, implant constructs and/or advanced biomaterial technologies.

  • Must also have a demonstrated ability to work with key opinion leaders (physicians and surgeons) to translate their input and feedback to improve current products, understand product failures or introduce new solutions.
